Chapter 16: Reunion

Instead of organizing to get everyone together myself, I decided to spring this on them intervention style. After finally being brought into the fold, David was more than willing to act as the guinea pig. Being a neutral party, he managed to convince Siena, Frank, and Keri to meet up with us. My only contribution was to involve Data and Dice, who had designated our beautiful rendezvous point and transportation to it.

“There’s a reason the Yarburn shore is the most popular place in the Dream State,” Data said when he met me on the beach, watching the turquoise water wash against the sand. “Some of the islands are unexplorable but I’ve given one the open access status to the I.D. codes of everyone in the group. That way we won’t be interrupted.”

I nodded, standing on the shore beside him. “I bet the details would get a bit rough around the edges though.”

Data grinned. “Tsh, you’d be surprised.”

I figured I didn’t have to imagine it considering I was about to be shown. Off from the cavern was an island where we were all going to meet up. The dense stone stuck out above the trees, and the gorges allowed us all to look out over the wide rocky shore. Avatars walked along the beach below, either trying out the water itself or locating the many Gateways down on the shore that led to dungeons where support abilities could be learned.

They arrived one by one, floating over on the circular platforms. I stood with Chloe; David was shuffling nervously between Brock and I, knowing he would have to be our intermediary. When Siena, Frank, and Tessa came over, Siena stalked up to me, one eyebrow raised.

“What’s this all about, Noah?” she asked, sounding unimpressed with being called all the way out here.

“Better wait till everyone’s arrived. I know how much you hate hearing people repeat themselves.”

She gave me a slight grin at this. “You’re right about that.”

As we waited for Keri, Tessa wandered around the rocky terrain. Upon crossing Dice’s path, she suddenly halted and pointed a hateful finger at him.

“You!” she shouted. “Not threatening players anymore, huh?”

Dice sighed and shook his head. “Tessa, I only told you the name of the dungeon to send Frank and what we’d pay for the orb. Colban was the one who threatened you.”

“But he was on your team!”

“And now he’s not.” He poked a thumb over his shoulder at me. “We’re under new management now. Besides, guilt by association is never a good way of accusing people of things they didn’t do.”

“If it makes you feel any better,” I cut in, “both Samuel and Colban are being held in prison and are awaiting trial for murder.”

Tessa crossed her arms in a pout and returned to Frank’s side. “Yeah, well, it’s a start, I suppose.”

Finally, Keri flew in and jumped down from Data’s Bird’s Eye platform. Being the last to arrive, she immediately glared at Chloe and me and purposefully stood as far away from us as possible with Frank and Tessa.
